Gene Dalton and Paul Thompson,[1] two former Harvard Business School Professors and partners of US-based consultancy Novation, developed the Four-Stage Model of career development after 20 years of organisational research. The model differs from most career management frameworks because it is performance-based, rather than psychological. The four stages describe what characterises a high-performing individual over their entire career, how this changes and how individuals can manage themselves and their careers to achieve success. Dalton and Thompson’s framework has subsequently been employed at companies such as 3M, Motorola, BP Amoco, Intel, DuPont and SmithKline Beecham.
