The Gap[1] is one of the world’s largest clothes retailers with revenues of $11.6 billion, 140,000 catalogue and Web staff, and 3,000 stores worldwide. Their brand image is young and fashionable and the company is seen by many people (particularly the young) as a desirable place to work. However, despite this positive image, the company has had a high turnover of staff. Staff consultation revealed that many thought there was little opportunity for career development. This has prompted The Gap to institute a career management programme.
